Glossary - continued

URN -- a decorative vase set on a pedestal.

VAULT -- an arched masonry ceiling or roof;  also, the space covered by such an arched ceiling.

VERANDA -- a long gallery-like porch.

VERGEBOARD -- a bargeboard.

VERNACULAR -- characteristic of a regional or local style of
construction.

VESTIBULE -- a small room between the outside entrance and the
inside door of a building.

VICTORIAN -- characteristic of the art, architecture, and social
customs of the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).

VITRIFIED -- surface glazed, referring to brick and other fired
clay products.

WAINSCOT -- a paneled wooden lining of an interior wall, usually
extending only about halfway up the wall.

WATTLE AND DAUB -- a method of wall construction whereby
interwoven
twigs and reeds (wattles) are roughly plastered over with clay or
mud (daub).

WEATHERBOARD -- a horizontal exterior wallboard with its lower
edge overlapping the board below;  clapboard.

WIDOW'S WALK -- a railed observation platform on the roof of a
house.

WIRE NAIL -- a nail manufactured by cutting it from a section of
wire.

WROUGHT IRON -- a tough but malleable form of iron that is rolled
and hammered (never melted or cast) to take on ornamental shapes.
