W.D. Vinzant (pictured above) was the
Jacksonville
Chief of Police during the Great Fire of 1901,
and he played
a major role in restoring order in the city
after this disaster.
His own home was destroyed in the fire, as
well as the police station.
He served from February 1898 to April 1913.

In June 1924, the City sold the Jacksonville
Police
Building property to Atlanta investor S.A.
Lynch for $90,000.
The agreement contained a time clause to
enable
the City to
acquire a new site and build a new police
station. In 1926, the new
police headquarters was completed at 711
Liberty
Street (shown above).
This classic brick and cast-stone building
was designed by the
architectural firm of Marsh & Saxelbye.
It served as Jacksonville’s
central police station until the mid-1970’s,
when it was converted
to become a state crime lab. In recent years,
the crime lab moved
into a new building in the LaVilla area and
the building is now once
again occupied by the Jacksonville Sheriff's
Office. It has come
full circle.
