AUGUSTUS A. SMITH RESIDENCE #1
55 EAST THIRD STREET
DATE: ca. 1888
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Augustus A. Smith
Built for Augustus A. Smith, a salesman for Benedict, Pollak & Co., this house is shown on the Koch Map of 1893 and the Sanborn Map of 1897.  City directories indicate that Smith was living here before 1889.  His granddaughter, Mrs. Everett Dwight, says that he built this house and the ones on either side of it: he "drew up his own plans, did his own contracting, and came there during his lunch hour to oversee everything."  The house features a wraparound veranda with square, paneled porch posts.  The balcony originally extended the full length of this veranda, and the doors that opened onto it are still present.  The gables are highlighted by novel cross-shaped ornaments and a patterned vergeboard.
