BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH PARSONAGE
218 WEST FIRST STREET *
DATE: ca. 1897-1903
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Unknown

Formerly situated at 1116 North Laura at West First Streets, the present site of the First Church of Christ Scientist (SP-61), this two-story residence was moved two blocks to the church property to serve as a parsonage.  The Sanborn Maps show that it was first moved to the corner of Hogan and West First Streets, facing on Hogan sometime between 1913 and 1921.  In 1958 it was moved again, this time to its current location facing West First Street.  A large porch on the rear was removed and a concrete block base was added at that time.  Most of the original intricate facade is still intact, and its use of wood trim is particularly noteworthy.  The porch posts are topped with ornamental brackets, which in turn support decorative crossbeams. The oversized fancy brackets under the second-story eaves and the dormers help to emphasize the broad overhang of the roof. The old parsonage is an important representative of Jacksonville's inner-city residential structures from about the time of the 1901 Fire.
* [In 1987, this house was moved again and is now situated at 303 W. 4th Street in Springfield.]
