BRERETON & LIGGETT BUILDING
15-27 WEST FORSYTH STREET
DATE: 1901
ARCHITECT: Arthur B. Gilkes
BUILDER: Unknown

Less than two months after the 1901 Fire, plans had been drawn for this two-story commercial building.  It was constructed for Isaac Brereton, a land commissioner, and Richard H. Liggett, an attorney.  The building was one of the first large commissions for Arthur Gilkes, after leaving his previous employment as architect for the S. S. Leonard Company, a local contractor and builder.  The first tenant of the building was the Chadwick-Swaim Furniture Company.  Over the years, the building was used for such diverse purposes as a bowling alley, a pool hall, and clothing stores.  In 1979 Charter Mortgage Company removed the badly altered storefronts and constructed a new first-story facade that is harmonious in texture and rhythm with the original second-story, although it is quite different in appearance from the 1901 design.
