D-36 FLORIDA BAPTIST CONVENTION BUILDING
218 WEST CHURCH STREET
DATE: 1924-1925
ARCHITECT: H. J. Klutho
BUILDER: Ponder-Hammell Company
NATIONAL REGISTER SITE
One block away from the First Baptist
Church complex is another Baptist-related building. The Florida
Baptist Convention was the first in the nation to construct its own
office facility for a state Baptist organization. A month after
the building was completed, a decision was made to add an extra
story. Two bands of brick above the fourth story mark the level
where the top of the building originally was. A tablet with the
date of construction is featured on the stepped parapet above the
cornice. This well proportioned building features subdued
classical ornamentation blended with a crisp 1920's modernism. It is
notable as the last Downtown Jacksonville office building designed by
H. J. Klutho.
