  MYSTERY IMAGE: LADY IN WHITE

(Source of picture: Florida State Archives)

Who is this pretty mystery lady in the elevator?  Jax photographer Jack Spottswood took this Jacksonville picture in 1951.  Perhaps the efficient-looking nurse worked at Brewster Hospital.  Prior to integration, Brewster served as the city's principle healthcare institution for African Americans.  Can anyone supply more details about this image?

STUMPER SOLVED!!! -- The place was indeed Brewster Hospital, and lady in white is Mrs. Nannye "Nan" L. Fletcher, who served at the venerable old institution.  She still attends meetings of Brewster's former nurses.  PLEASE CLICK HERE for a photo of Mrs. Fletcher fifty-three years later!

VERY SPECIAL THANKS for cracking this mystery goes to Mrs. Diane Melendez, who is working hard for the preservation of what's left in the local neighborhood of LaVilla.
