PICTURE -- Here's the City of Jacksonville Flag in 1934, during the Great Depression. What was going on in the River City that year? Local events included the birth of pop star Pat Boone, the founding of Jacksonville University, a visit from actress Katherine Hepburn, and a possible secret residence of gangster "Machine Gun" Kelly, who may've lived undercover at 2815 Grand Avenue in Ortega. Also in 1934, Charlie Bennett, a local lawyer, was admitted to the bar. He later became one of the longest-sitting US congressmen in history.
